S.M.A.R.T. Goals aren’t the only way you can be unleashing success and help your personal and professional growth. OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) provide direction, focus, and a roadmap to achieve desired outcomes. I am not knocking traditional goal-setting methods but I simply don’t believe it’s the only way, because OKRs can be a highly effective framework for gaining traction. OKRs provide a structured and dynamic approach to goal-setting, enabling individuals and teams to align their efforts, measure progress, and achieve remarkable results. What are OKRs?
OKRs, which stands for Objectives and Key Results, is a goal-setting framework developed by Andy Grove at Intel and later popularized by Google. These objectives are then supported by measurable Key Results, which serve as tangible milestones to track progress.

Measurability:
SMART Goals: The SMART framework puts a strong emphasis on setting measurable goals. It requires goals to have concrete criteria that can be objectively assessed, often using metrics or numbers.

Timeframe:
SMART Goals: SMART goals require a specific time-bound element. They establish a clear deadline or timeline for achieving the goal, ensuring a sense of urgency and providing a timeframe for assessment.
OKRs: OKRs typically operate on a defined timeframe, commonly quarterly or annually. They encourage regular review and adjustment, providing flexibility and adaptability within the time period.
Flexibility and Ambition:
SMART Goals: SMART goals prioritize setting goals that are realistic and achievable within a specific timeframe. While they promote attainability, they may not explicitly encourage pushing beyond comfort zones or challenging existing limits.
OKRs: OKRs encourage setting ambitious goals that stretch individuals and teams. They inspire a growth mindset and foster innovation, encouraging individuals to aim higher and exceed what they might have initially deemed achievable.
Cascading Structure:
SMART Goals: SMART goals typically focus on individual or team-level objectives, and their alignment with broader organizational goals may not be explicitly emphasized.
OKRs: OKRs embrace a cascading structure, where top-level Objectives are connected to team-level and individual-level Objectives. This alignment ensures coherence and helps to link individual efforts to broader organizational goals.
Both OKRs and SMART goals have their merits and can be effective in helping you journey into unleashing success depending on the context and preferences. SMART goals offer a more structured and specific approach, while OKRs foster alignment, ambition, and adaptability.
