Over the years, I’ve started many things – I still have a few books just waiting to be written but staying motivated can be a challenge. And here’s the thing, creativity is a journey, not a destination and it takes time, effort, and dedication to stay motivated and keep creating.
Over the years I’ve learned a thing or two on staying motivated and wanted to share them with you!
- Be clear on what you want to achieve. Once you know what you want, you can break it down into smaller, more manageable goals. And I am not talking about the top surface desires, I am meaning the ones that reside deep down in your soul.
- Create a routine. Schedule time for creativity each day, even if it’s just for a short period of time. This will help you make creativity a habit. Sometimes that means creating in the in-between such as during your lunch break or while in the waiting room of a doctor’s office.
- Find a supportive community. Having a space where you can be unapologetically yourself with your creative ideas can motivate you and the members of the community can help you stay motivated.
- Don’t be afraid to fail. There is so much goodness in failing – and I prefer to call it learning moments as there is so much to gain from those experiences.
- Celebrate your successes. You can celebrate small and big milestones when you make progress towards your creative goals as that will help you stay motivated and inspired.
- Take breaks. Don’t try to be creative all the time. Sometimes the best way to be creative is to step away from your work for a while and it helps avoid burnout. The time it takes to recover can be really tough so taking a time out is a great way to avoid that and keep going all the same time.
- Get organized. Have a dedicated space for your creative work and keep your supplies organized. This will help you stay focused and productive.
- Take care of yourself. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising. When you’re taking care of yourself, you’ll have more energy and focus for your creativity. Anytime I am in the woods for a hike I get so many new ideas that I don’t know what to do with them half the time.
- Don’t give up. There will be times when you feel discouraged or unmotivated. Here’s the thing though, you have to keep going because the more you practice, the better you’ll become at being creative.
- Have fun! Creativity is supposed to be enjoyable and not a chore. If it’s not fun for you then maybe try something different.
Following these tips can help you stay motivated on your creative journey as this is a process, not a product. It takes time and effort to develop your creative skills and if you’re persistent and dedicated, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

A free resource library is a collection of digital resources I’ve compiled together. These resources include ebooks, worksheets, checklists, and other helpful materials.
